Picks and Pans – Baltimore/D.C.

PICKS:
Birches

Tuesday night special: 2 burgers with a choice of 2 scrumptious toppings (e.g. gorgonzola carmelized onions and avocado) for $12, and that’s with fries!

Bertha’s

The mussels lived up to the hype. We all agreed that the tomato anchovy butter was the sauce of choice.

Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian

Worth a look just for the external architecture and landscaping. The exhibits were hit and miss as they were each curated by individuals from the tribe featured and the quality of the content varied a lot as a result.

Smithsonian Sculpture Gardens

The sculptures were sufficiently captivating to keep us outdoors on a cold, drizzly DC day.

Natty Bohs

At 52 cents a beer, it’s hard to beat this native Baltimore brew on bang for the buck. National Bohemian you have recruited 3 loyal followers this week!

American Museum of Visionary Art

If you’re even remotely close to Baltimore, you should make an effort to get to this museum. It’s the only outsider art museum in the U.S., and they sure did it up right.

PANS:
Reflecting Pool on the Mall (in March)

If you want to reflect on how much goose poop the emptied out pool contains, then you are in luck….any other reflection will be hindered by the strong odor of said goose poop.

EQUIVOCAL:
Scrapple

This mid-Atlantic pork specialty received mixed reviews in our camp. Erica does admit that it’s porky flavor and the fact that it’s usually cooked in bacon fat are two factors in it’s favor, but it’s awfully hard to get over it’s bread pudding like consistency. Sean doesn’t have much to say on the matter, but he did manage to eat his, Erica’s and Bonnie’s portions without any hesitation.
