PICKS:
Sunset at Morro Rock

Morro Rock is all that remains of a once gigantic volcano. It sits on Morro Beach like a lost behemoth, left behind when the rest of its kind vanished. During sunset, the waves crash dramatically against it and create great plumes of spray in the fiery light, reminiscent of the rock’s volcanic past.
Sean says: I spent many a day as a lad stomping in the waves, building sand castles, and generally relaxing near the great Morro Rock in this sleepy town where my dad’s parents once lived. But if I had too much fun in the sand, ol’ Grampa Montgomery would hose me off in the driveway lest I get sand in the house. It’s all fun and games until you’re standing half naked in the driveway at twilight as the air temperature dips under 60 degrees and Grampa turns an icy garden hose on you. Ah, the memories…

Morro Bay Coffee Co.

Just when we were about to give up on the possibility of finding a coffee shop in Morro Bay, the heavens opened up, light shone down and I saw a sign with these fateful words: fresh coffee, free wi-fi. Well, actually, I rather undramatically spotted Morro Bay Coffee Co. just as we were about to get on the freeway, but it saved us the trek to another town all the same. Plus, it was a really friendly local joint and they even had some live music at 10 in the morning.

Walk up to the top of Black Hill

There’s not a lot to do in Morro Bay besides hanging out at the beach, but since it wasn’t exactly beach weather when we were there, we took the short walk up Black Hill, where we got a panoramic view of the bay and the hills surrounding it.
Sean says: We hiked the ol’ Black Hill standing only a few blocks from my grandparents house at least once, if not a few times, on each visit to Morro Bay, but I can’t say I remember a clearer day than this time around.

Morro Bay sounds like the perfect beach town to me–quiet and free of crazy tourist traps with cool beaches to explore. Safe travels north and dress warm–expected high of minus 5. Yes, that’s the high. This morning, it was down to 22 below. Enjoy AZ warmth while you can!

    • Had our first night in the 10F range (according to weather.com though we overheard a local say it was actually in the zero range) on Wednesday. Not so bad really, though our liquids froze a bit.
